  • Kit315,

On my GM Cobra the cap is 15pf. The trim pots are both 100K. There is 120pf capacitor
on the back side of pcb, see photo

    • thanks Altra! 120pf does nothing. I have learned this a time ago. you can look all tesoro and whites schematics and do not notice a capacitor on the comparator.

Metal Detecting: Perry Massie's TESORO Tour
      good post:

interesting. Such cheap matierials and such few amount of matierals used, a huge amount produced yet still so expensive????

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EA3aXkc6t64

look as people in tesoro does those coils. there is a moment with o-scope. it may be interesting if you build the coil yourself.

Notice how they're very careful about giving away any real details. Firstly, there is no mention of a nulling coil. Secondly, the initial phase-shift seems to be in a different position whenever they start the test for a different target. When they show the ferrite, the phase-shift is at the place where we all expect it to be (on the right), but earlier with the iron target it was shifted to the left-hand side of the zero-crossing. It looks to me like the presentation by the Tesoro guys was intentionally designed to mislead any would-be detector designers.

It is more than obvious that companies protect their "secrets".

It would be very illogical to except from a company to saw you the exact and whole manufacture process of a products, thous giving you the knowledge to make this product yourself. Metal detectors can be made at home, it has been proven more than once, so they will not reveal this information.

              • So, no one says that they have yet to reveal! This is a video clip from the factory and no more. And who is very interesting - he can gain the information you need!

                • True dear Derx, but that does not mean that each company will not try to hide these things from becoming public knowledge anytime soon.
If the manufacturing of a product is considered by the public as something that requires expensive lab equipment or factory machines, then most people will not even think of doing it. Of course there are persons who know and enlighten us who do no know.

                    • This is only because in United States, patents are known to the public. In other countries they have different laws about pattens. But eventually, we can learn how to build something ourself, or even copy more complex products, if we take them apart and study them. This is good for competition.

Same thing happened with King Cobra. The PCB was copied from people who taken apart theirm King Cobra metal detectors.

The point is that the video about Tesoro was probably intentionally designed to mislead any would-be detector designers, as Qiaozhi, so we have to be careful about what we take as reference from this video.

That's right! Be careful not to do what is written in the patent, and that is shown on the video!
This is very dangerous and can lead to unpredictable consequences.

Hi scs, which " Bulgarian 2 channel detector with meter" do you have in mind?

It is not dangerous, but it can be illegal. Patents exist so the rights of companies and designers will be protected. Copying a patent can be illegal, but if the patented product is old and out of production, no one cares in most cases.

In anyway, it is not logical to expect that each company will show you in a video how their products are actually made. These videos are to promote and advertise products, not to educate metal detector enthusiasts about how to make metal detectors. Use at your own risk.

They usually hide things. In some videos they say that they cannot go to a restricted area in the factory, or that something is secret and cannot be revealed. This knowledge costs money as long as the product sells.

And basically they just show how the coils are made and how they test them with the oscilloscope, nothing more.

                            • These videos just show you that there are real people working in such establishments. There are not many secrets around, and you don't have to hide anything. Big money comes from working hard, and being able to work hard means that your product sells well.

It is a silly notion that some extra turbo special secret is going to make or break your market success.

                              • I am speaking generally, and they dd not shown how the PCBs where made, or anything. A new technology always sells, but eventually someone will develop something similar, so things like PCBs and anything that reveals information about the new technology will not be in such videos.

Is like Coca-Cola. We have copied it, but the recipe is secret.

But in electronics, when you have the actual product, you have all the technology right there.

So i will trust people from this forums who have the actual products, and know a "few" things about electronics and metal detectors, rather than trusting each company's "experts".
