  • Whites Eagle Spectrum

    Maybe someone can help me.
Does any body know what lcd controller chip is used for the LCD module.
    Yes my backlight is dead.
I thought there might be a BL lcd module that is not cold cathode (EL) that I could
    use with a few mods.
Sending to unit to USA for repair is not viable.
    No whites repairers down under.
I havent dismantled the MD yet.It still works fine..just that BL doesnt.
    Regards

    Hi John,

I had a Whites Spectrum XLT with the LCD that went. I bought one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...WNASIF:GB:1123 and it worked really well.
If your whites has the same screen, it would be easier and cheaper to buy the whole unit and swap it out.

When backlight is dead, you need illuminative foil only.(under LCD)It can be cutted to proper dimension (from larger one) and is quite cheap.
I tried some chips(complette lcd)from ebay. Some chips are compactible, but I dont remember which.I also tired another backlight from LEDs,but it is not simple mods. Its require some mods in circuit.

        Thanks for the replies.
The XLT has a bigger screen than the Eagle spectrum.
I also read on this site that when the backlight dies it usually kills the DC converter.
This is why Iam thinking of swapping it out to a led module.
I realise it will involve some mods, but Iam unsure if the Eagle spectrum display uses a standard Industry compatable controller?
        Back to the drawing board!
        Cheers

          I have had Eagle,and I wrote about it,not XLT.In 99% cases DC converter is OK.Foil is dead.
I look for my old post in Polish forum. The controller is based on HD44780.(You need version with 5ICs not 3ICs)The new one has better contrast.I have had also LED lcd,but it was very fat and dont fit to case. The second way is swap LCD glass and foil only from new one.The contras will be better.

When you want repair backlight you need foil only.
When you want new LCD look for 5 chips controller 4x20 based on HD44780 (ebay)
When you want LED backlight it is quite complicated,(6 steps of intesity, etc)I dont try it.

On Proscan site I am registered member, but is no problem looking site without registration.
So I dont know what is problem.
                  Cheers.

I think,it can be OK,but no waranty from my side.Your own risk.My works good.I am not sure, but maybe are versions with black characters(not blue)for even better contrast. But against original LCD this one(blue) will be much better contrast.
You will need long soldering pins with plastic header, something like this
                      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/5-PCS-40-...item3cb95639d9
but with a little longer pins. Also is recommended isolation tape between PCBs,because chips have not identical place on PCB with original one.Metalic header of glass LCD can shorteed any traces on lower PCB.
I buid this project 5 years ago,so I don remember everythnig.

As it says on the website: "Use our free proxy to surf anonymously online, hide your IP address, secure your internet connection, hide your internet history, and protect your online identity. "

The other advantage (as you found out) is that you can get to sites that are otherwise blocked by your IT department or by your ISP.
