Geo, about the non useful 'ferrous' detection of your "FrancoItaly quartz lrl", try adding 100pf capacitor in series with high impendance resistor 1Meg or better (or vairiable resistor), at the and of your antenna, like our friend Esteban Cabrera Grinok already has suggested, tried and said, in one of his posts. This simple RC filter would be enough for eliminating ferrous targets detection, because high impendance resistor is not an obstacle for 'halo-signal'. :)

Also don't forget to try small Bojan's gift at the top most of your antenna. I think it should be work even with the small coil antennas.
