Hi Michael,
You probably already learned Australia has some high iron ground where the natural gold is found, and the Minelab detectors can be used for nugget hunting. Some people also go hunting for lost jewelry and coins.
One way to find other detectorists is to ask at the metal detector stores. They may know other people who want to go detecting, or clubs that you can hunt with. There is a store that sells metal detectors at the east side of Melborne called "Miner's Den" at 464 Whitehorse Road. You can find a map and telephone number on their website here:
