The tube ontop of the device houses the batteries, not the ferrite.
Could be that he still employs a ferrite inside the main box? Yes, but if he has deeply studied the subject as it seems, I bet he does not need one at all, since we can spot IR leds inside the device and use them for carrier, reception and pinpointing.
Anyway, Alonso's PD aproach is an outdated concept and there are much better ways to build much more poweful and stable circuits with the aid of special components and microelectronics. Our friend did his homework and I congratulate him, altough improvements need to be made to filter out less valuable metals, unless he desires to detect them.
