They can search for gold, silver, iron, copper, and can discriminate it or for example search for combination of those (iron and gold, for example, this is important!). I remember once they search for iron and gold and found a sword and a medal mixed with bones, so we think was a militar died in battle.
With this method this singular person (LRL rod manager) has near 100% success, also at great distance, except one time that found a "cemetery" of electric lantern batteries (more than 50). But I think was for big "chemical" activity caused by the batteries!
