How to use?
As any other magnetic field sensor.
Module is developed for Arduino, but probably you do not want to use it with Arduino.
In this case you need digital to analog converter like this to build simple magnetometer:

Magnetic sensor cannot detect non-magnetic metals.

Distance depend on many factors..
