If you see any advertisment saying their rod is perfectly balanced, stay away from it. L-rods are not supposed to be balaned. That just shows the maker does not have a clue what they are doing. A balanced rod will not work and most likely will wander around aimlessly. You will never be able to feel a target response.I saw a video the guy says "See the lock on." The rod wa just swingng around non-stop. ANd of course the 100% accurate claim is another red warning flag.

I’ll call this Tip #45 but I admit I lost track
Might have already said this, but I think many people might not be circling the suspected target to look for other signal line(s) to the real target. Sometimes if some junk metal is on or near the signal line it will act like a good target. So you need to circle this suspected spot with the L-rods to see if there is a line coming off it to an area farther away.
Or you can move the transmitter to a different location and check to see if the hot spot is still good. Of course you must turn off the transmitter and wait at least five minutes before you start it again. This gives time to bleed off any residual energy.
Yes, I am guilty of not circling the hot spot.
Depending on the locator there will likely be two lines coming off the suspect area one line at each edge of the suspect target field when you are near it, but as you moved farther away the two lines might come back together into what appears to be only one line. Follow this to the real target and at some point the single line will split apart into two lines each going to one edge of the target’s field.
BTW, I should give credit to many of these tips to Tim Williams. His website is http://www.lrlman.com
Tim also has a YouTube page LRLMAN
Tim is a member on this forum as Tim Williams. There is another member who uses lrlman as his id but this is not Tim.

Tip #46: I know this is basic but check for depth of the target. With the transmitter running, stand on the target spot, turn ninety degrees from the signal line and start walking with the L-rods until you get a rod response. This distance from the target spot is the depth. The more info you can get about the target will help you make the decision whether to dig or not. You can repeat this for different directions from the target if you like to get a better result. Note: If you are going to walk back towards the transmitter you should start with the L-rods in the closed position and the response will be the rods open up.Last edited by Mike(Mont); 11-10-2025, 03:44 PM.
