  • Vertex Adroit

I recently saw a youtube video about the Vertex Adroit. It's a hand-held locator, looks to be a copy of the Ajax Alpha but half the cost with some other features. It does have a swing rod but when using the RMS (Response Measurement System) you dont follow the antenna, you listen for the strongest sound when aimed at a target. That is is ctive mode, in passive mode there is only a solid antenna, same thing. There are two other modes. ANyway I was wondering is anyone has any experience with this locator or the Ajax Alpha? The User Manual is hard to follow. Https://vertexdetectors.com/product/adroit/

Someone told me those hand-held locators pick up rusted sheet metal. I sent an email to the factory and they replied that you need to turn down the ground balance and sensitivity and set it for manual to detect only one type target. So I kinda suspect the person who complained did not know this remedy. They were not using an Adroit, I don't know what it was but one of those expensive hand-helds.

The youtube videos don't show much. A dealer said there is a how-to video, it must come with it because I could not find it.

I had to read the User Manual about ten times before I finally think I got it figured out. The RMS mode does not differentiate between the various targets. The ADRI mode is the automatic mode that detects all targets and tells you what it found and approximate distance and depth. The MDRI mode is the manual mode where you enter the type of target you want to detect and the distance and the depth. Both the ADRI and MDRI you need to follow the swing rod. This locator does not detect freshly buried targets. I saw a youtube video saying it is a scam but they were trying to detect a target they just set on the ground. So I don't know how well this locator will work for people who cannot use the L-rods. While you don't need to follow the rod for the RMS mode, (you listen for the strongest sound) it doesn't tell you what you detected, only that there is one (or more) of the targets there. That could be any of the various targets it is set to detect, like iron or water, aluminum, etc. So you have to use the ADRI or MDRI modes to see what target you hit. In the ADRI mode it tells you which target(s) and the distance and the approximate distance and depth, whereas the MDRI you set which target type, distance and depth. That mode is probably more accurate.

The Adroit arrived today. I guess I have a little bit of buyer’s remorse. I hit the automatic ground balance in the RMS mode and it seemed to work okay but when I scanned the area it was giving no response. I thought it was defective. I called the dealer and I don’t think they know anything about it, they told me to send them an email and I guess they will send it to the factory. But I started fiddling with the controls and when I turned the ground balance down a bit the machine came to life. The factory had told me to take it out in the country to practice but I wasn’t able to go so I tried it in my yard. Obviously I need practice away from power lines, etc. During my messing around I was inside my house and put it in ADRI mode and had it pointing outside and the gold icon lit up. To get the proper measurements you are supposed to move over 25 meters but I could not do that inside my house so I only moved over a few meters and it told me the gold was 400-500 meters away and 5 meters deep. Most certainly it would give a different result had I moved over the full 25 meters. So it’s going to be a few days before I get out of town to practice.

I tried to tune it in my yard and didn’t have much luck in the RMS mode. I have power lines nearby and telephone lines overhead. I suspect WiFi could be a big problem. They said the RMS is very sensitive and there?s probably too much interference. But maybe I’ll learn more out in the country. I wasn’t even trying to run in a southerly direction. And there is no how-to video. When in ADRI you have to hold it pointing in the same direction until the timer runs down, maybe a couple of minutes. Do the idea is you find a hot spot in RMS them switch to ADRI and keep the rod pointed in that direction while it works. Then it tells you what it there, how far away, and how deep.

All the info says to stay away from powerlines and electrical devices. Maybe after practice I can tune it better but for now I have concluded it won't work in my yard. I have powerlines on the west side, powerlines diagonal overhead in the yard, telephone lines, electrical cord for pond pump. And I think wifi may be the worst offender. In about ten days I will have more free time to do some testing in clear areas.

Only after testing on rough terrain will you make a conclusion about the operation of the device. I looked at their website and I didn't trust it. Mike, keep us posted, it's still interesting.

They don?t say how far away you need to be from power lines. I have a permission. There are power lines but I guess I?ll find out hopefully this weekend.

I sent the factory a question about how far away powerlines need to be. A guy told me somebody he talked to said they don't work that good in the city. But iI?m waiting for an answer from the factory.

I didn?t see the reply from the factory; it was in my spam folder. So he said stay ?at least 80 - 100 meters away from active power lines, WiFi routers, transformers, or any strong electrical sources?.

I watched the Ajax Alpha training video. The Adroit has many similarities.

This is the Ajax Alpha training video. If you go to Settings there is a translator.

Many years ago i had a Vertex. It was a heavy and very expensive detector. From what i saw all electronic modes was fake and it worked only as a dowsing detector. Also it had iside two samples hiden in the rotated head. So many money for nothing... and i believe that this new model is a lifting of the old one. A new fake in the place of the old fake.
